Stan Mayer                 mailto:stan.mayer@wcrfm.org.uk

Stanley Mayer was born in 1946 in Stoke-on-Trent, into a local mining family. His early

life in the Potteries gave Stan a lifelong interest in canals, engineering and local history as

his regular listeners know well from his frequent stories and talks on these themes.

At the age of eighteen Stan joined the Army to see the world beyond the industrial

midlands. He had soon visited a variety of foreign countries, but most importantly for his

future, Stan was stationed in Warminster which brought about a lifelong association with

the town and the county of Wiltshire, one that  has lasted over the past forty years with only one very short break.

Five years ago Stan decided to move back to his home town of Stoke-on-Trent. He soon realised that he had become

a staunch Warminster man in the intervening years and at the end of 2006,  finally moved back to his beloved

Warminster for good! During  the four years of his 'exile'  he continued to make programmes for WCR which

he sent down to the studio on mini-disc each week. Stan now works in security in Salisbury and continues

his regular work for WCR. His experiences have provided material for his talks and stories, and his lifelong

love of music, to his varied and interesting programmes.  Stan prides himself on providing music for every

taste. His personal favourites are Country and Western and popular music from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
